Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has sanctioned the sale of four first-team players this summer in order to raise funds for the signing of Bayer Leverkusen ace Jeremie Frimpong. The 22-year-old right-back is a priority for Ten Hag, who wants to add more attacking quality to his defence. Frimpong, a product of Manchester City’s academy, joined Leverkusen from Celtic two years ago and he’s established himself as one of the best attacking full-backs in Europe.
The players set to be offloaded are Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly, Brandon Williams and Alex Telles. Maguire’s departure would be the most controversial, as he joined United from Leicester for a fee of £80m in 2019 and was installed as captain just six months later. However, he’s lost his place this season to Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane. Though Ten Hag likes Maguire, tough decisions must be made and he feels he has enough cover in central defence, while Frimpong’s arrival would further enhance the way the Dutchman wants to play.
