Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag insisted Lisandro Martinez was ‘calm’ and ‘okay’ in the dressing room following his nasty-looking injury in a 2-2 draw against Sevilla.

The Argentine was in possession with five minutes to go at Old Trafford when he collapsed to the turf, with no opposition player around him.

Both sets of players quickly surrounded Martinez to check if he was okay, such was the way in which he went to ground.

Martinez was clearly distressed and after a quick check from the medical department, the Argentine had to be lifted off the pitch by two Sevilla players.

The defender was then stretchered from the side of the pitch down the tunnel, with Martinez putting his head in his hands along the way.

There were fears that the defender had snapped his Achilles but Ten Hag denied this was the area the Argentine had damaged.

While Ten Hag was unwilling to specify the injury Martinez had sustained, he says the defender was surprisingly upbeat in the dressing room.

‘I have spoken to him and he’s okay. He’s calm,’ said Ten Hag.

‘Of course [it’s important to be calm]. We are competing in three competitions so you need a squad. If Licha and Varane are not available on Sunday [against Nottingham Forest] then others have to do it. We have seen Maguire played a good game on Saturday and tonight also he played a really good game.’

Martinez’s injury capped off a torrid night for United, who threw away a two-goal lead in the final six minutes at the Theatre of Dreams.

Marcel Sabitzer scored twice in the first half and United were well in command by half-time and should have seen off their Spanish opponents.

But Raphael Varane was unable to continue after the first-half break and Anthony Martial lasted just an hour on his return to the starting XI.

Martinez then made way moments before Sevilla scored their equaliser, which cannoned in off Harry Maguire.
