Should Manchester United Hand Alejandro Garnacho the Iconic No.7 Shirt?

The iconic Manchester United No.7 shirt is currently without an owner following Cristiano Ronaldo’s acrimonious departure from the club in January. Rather than hand the famous jersey to a new summer signing, however, United are considering promoting youngster Alejandro Garnacho and bestowing him with the honour of waring the number warn by the likes of Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and David Beckham.

Who is Alejandro Garnacho?

Alejandro Garnacho is an 18-year-old winger who made his debut for Manchester United just over 12 months ago and made a significant breakthrough under Erik ten Hag last season. His club exploits have been rewarded with recognition at senior international level and he made his first appearance for Argentina against Australia earlier this month. Such is the teenager’s reputation that Real Madrid were contemplating making an audacious move for him last year when his long-term future was a matter of conjecture.

Garnacho’s Commitment to Manchester United

Garnacho put any speculation to bed by signing a new contract in April and pledging his commitment to the Premier League giants. He said at the time: ‘When I joined this incredible club, I dreamt of achieving my debut, playing at Old Trafford, scoring my first goal and winning trophies with this badge on my chest. I feel very proud and emotional to have experienced these moments already, together with my family who have supported me every step of the way. We are all humbled to have this chance to continue our journey at Manchester United and I have already begun to work on achieving the next set of targets and ambitions. The manager and his coaching staff have helped me to improve in every way, and with their support, I am developing each day to help the team to be successful. I am relishing the future and can’t wait to create more special memories with this group, in front of our amazing supporters.’

The No.7 shirt at Manchester United has been warn by some of the greatest players in the club’s history, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, Alexis Sanchez, Memphis Depay, Angel Di Maria, Antonio Valencia, Michael Owen, David Beckham, Eric Cantona and Bryan Robson.

Should Alejandro Garnacho Receive the No.7 Shirt?

Alejandro Garnacho has already made a huge impact at Manchester United and is clearly a player with a bright future ahead of him. His commitment to the club is clear and he has already achieved a great deal in his short time at Old Trafford. Whether or not he should be given the No.7 shirt is a decision that will be up to Manchester United’s management team to make, but it would certainly be a fitting reward for his hard work and dedication so far.
