Erik ten Hag admits it was a ‘risk’ to drop Marcus Rashford from Manchester United starting XI against Wolves

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag believes his decision to drop Marcus Rashford was a ‘risk’.

The 25-year-old was not named in their starting XI for the 1-0 Premier League win over Wolves due to oversleeping and missing a team meeting.

He soon came off the bench to net the winner though, guiding United to another victory.

It was a bold call from Ten Hag and despite admitting it was a ‘risk’, he has insisted it was necessary choice to make.

“Maybe it is a risk but if you want to develop something and to create a winning attitude and culture you have to go this way,” said the United boss via the Independent.

“If you allow them to be undisciplined, if they don’t match the standards, the values, the rules we set together – and that is staff, the players and the dressing room – then it will come back and blow in your face.

“Because on the pitch it will not add discipline which is necessary to win games. In my opinion, you have to go this way.

“If it is the right person and the right characters they will react like this.

“In relation to Marcus, I was quite convinced, knowing him for seven or eight months, that I could expect this reaction he showed.”

Rashford soon returned to the starting lineup and scored yet again for United in the 3-0 win against Bournemouth.

He would net his 13th goal of the season just three days later as the Red Devils beat Everton 3-1 in the FA Cup.

A rejuvenated Rashford has enjoyed a superb season so far, with the previous campaign proving to be difficult.

His performances this time round have helped United to get into the Premier League top four as they eye a return to Champions League football.
