The Blues are reportedly set to pay £6m more than his £106m buyout clause in order to secure his signature ahead of their rivals.

Fernandez returned to action for Benfica on December 30, playing 89 minutes in a 3-0 defeat to Braga, before heading to Argentina.

According to Portuguese outlet Record, the player is expected to be handed a heavy fine by the club for breaching disciplinary regulations.

The report adds that the clubs fans have taken aim at the star, urging them to sell, after a picture of Fernandez enjoying New Year celebrations emerged.

Benfica boss Roger Schmidt had stated all his players would remain in Portugal between matches, and there were ‘no exceptions for players travelling home for New Year’.

“We are a professional football team, the rules are for all players,” Schmidt said.

“It is very important for all players to rest between games, to be ready for the next game. There are no exceptions to that.”

Chelsea remain hopeful of securing the signature of Fernandez, with the player understood to have has his heart set on a move to London.

Should Graham Potter’s side secure a deal, it would make the World Cup winner the most expensive signing in Premier League history.

The Blues, meanwhile, are expected to finalise their £33.5m deal for Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile following the 21-year old’s medical.
