# England Women Advance to Quarter-Finals of World Cup with Penalty Shootout Win

England’s women’s team have advanced to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Nigeria. The match ended 1-1 after extra time, with Chloe Kelly scoring the winning penalty to send the Lionesses through.

The match was an intense affair, with both sides having chances to win the game in normal time. England took the lead in the first half through Ellen White, but Nigeria equalised in the second half through Asisat Oshoala. The game went to extra time, but neither side could find a winner, setting up a dramatic penalty shootout.

England goalkeeper Karen Bardsley made two crucial saves in the shootout, and when Chloe Kelly stepped up to take the fifth penalty, she made no mistake, firing her shot into the top corner to send England through.

The win sets up a quarter-final clash with Norway on Thursday, and manager Phil Neville was delighted with his team’s performance. “I’m so proud of the players,” he said. “They showed great character and resilience to come through a tough match. We’ve worked hard to get to this stage and now we have to focus on the next game.”

The match was watched by millions of fans around the world, and Kelly’s winning penalty was met with jubilation from the England supporters. “It was an incredible feeling to score the winning penalty,” said Kelly. “I just wanted to keep my cool and make sure I put it away. I’m so proud of the team and we can’t wait for the next game.”

England now have a great chance of progressing further in the tournament, and Neville is confident that his team can go all the way. “We have a great chance of winning this tournament,” he said. “We have a talented squad and we’re playing some great football. We just need to keep our focus and keep believing in ourselves.”

The Lionesses will face Norway on Thursday in the quarter-finals, and England fans will be hoping that their team can continue their impressive run in the tournament. You can watch all the action on BBC iPlayer, BBC Sounds & the BBC Sport website & app – available to UK users only.
