John Barnes, a former Liverpool and England footballer, has managed to avoid bankruptcy by making a last-minute payment to the taxman. An HMRC official confirmed in court that Barnes had paid the full amount he owed, after a hearing in February was adjourned to allow for settlement negotiations. Barnes, who is now 59 years old, was said to owe at least £200,000, but had already repaid £100,000. The ex-Watford player was not present in court, but was represented by his barrister. Barnes was previously declared bankrupt in 2009 over tax debts, but the order was later rescinded. Land Registry documents show that he has also been the subject of bankruptcy petitions in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2019. Since retiring from football, Barnes has worked as a manager, author, commentator and pundit.
