England drawn against USA, Iran and could play Scotland or Wales in huge Battle of Britain clash at 2022 World Cup

England will play the USA, Iran and potentially Scotland or Wales in their group games at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The draw for the tournament took place in Doha on Friday ahead of the start date on 21 November – and threw up the potential for England’s first ever Battle of Britain at a World Cup finals.

England have never faced Scotland or Wales at a World Cup but could meet one of them in Qatar this winter if either can navigate their way through the European play-off path.

One of Wales, Scotland or Ukraine will go into Group B after the remaining European play-off path is completed in June, having been delayed due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Gareth Southgate’s men will kick off their campaign against Iran, a side they have never faced in a senior competitive international.

Due to being drawn in Group B, the Three Lions will play Iran on the opening day, with the venues for the group games yet to be decided.

It will be the first time England have played on the opening day of a World Cup since 1966 – not a bad omen.

England also face a tasty tie against the USA, who they last faced competitively at the 2010 World Cup, drawing 1-1 after goalkeeper Rob Green fumbled a long range shot from former Fulham man Clint Dempsey.
