WASHINGTON, D.C. — Magic Johnson, renowned for his success in the NBA and as a part owner of various sports teams, has found a new level of excitement as a member of the Washington Commanders’ ownership group. As an African-American, Johnson acknowledges the significance of his role in a league that has struggled with diversity.
While there are no Black majority owners in the NFL, Johnson became a limited owner when Josh Harris purchased the Commanders this year. In addition to his stake in the Commanders, Johnson is also a part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Los Angeles Sparks, and the Los Angeles FC. However, he expressed that Sunday’s home opener against the Arizona Cardinals holds a special emotional significance for him due to his minority status.
Johnson stated, “There’s no higher sports league than the NFL, and it’s been hard for us to get into the league,” referring to African-Americans. He believes that his ownership position allows all African-Americans and minorities in the country to feel like owners of the team as well.
The significance of Johnson’s ownership extends beyond the football field. At an event held at a Boys & Girls Club, Johnson donated $1,000 and $5,000 to two children with the condition that they open a bank account. The Commanders also contributed $50,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington. Furthermore, Johnson distributed autographed Commanders’ jerseys with his iconic Lakers number, 32, emphasizing his connection with the community.
During his speech at the event, Johnson expressed his happiness about being one of the owners because he looks like everyone in attendance. He believes that this representation is a powerful thing. Johnson acknowledged Josh Harris and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for recognizing the importance of diversity in the league and making his ownership possible.
Johnson’s impact goes beyond symbolism. He recently addressed the Washington Commanders’ players, emphasizing the importance of preparation and discipline in winning championships. As a former athlete with an impressive collection of 14 world championship rings, Johnson’s desire to help the team achieve a Super Bowl victory is evident.
While Johnson did not mention previous owner Dan Snyder by name, he assured the players that the atmosphere under the new ownership group would be different. Snyder faced multiple investigations by the NFL, Congress, and the FTC for allegations of a toxic workplace culture. Johnson assured the players that they could focus solely on their on-field performance without distractions or negative headlines.
Reflecting on what Sunday’s game means to him, Johnson mentioned his wife, Cookie, who is also a passionate sports fan. He expressed his disbelief at becoming an NFL owner and anticipates it to be a great moment. Once the kickoff happens, Johnson is ready to support the Commanders and hopes for a successful season.
As Magic Johnson continues to break barriers and pave the way for minorities in sports ownership, his presence in the NFL brings a renewed sense of diversity and inclusion. With his broad shoulders carrying the weight of countless minorities who have come before him, Johnson’s impact extends far beyond the football field. His ownership position serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for aspiring African-American owners and fans alike.
In a league striving for diversity and equal representation, Magic Johnson’s role as a minority owner in the NFL is a step in the right direction. As he takes his place among the Washington Commanders’ ownership group, Johnson’s influence will undoubtedly shape the future of sports ownership and inspire generations to come.
