Eintracht Frankfurt chief admits Cristiano Ronaldo was offered to them in player’s bid to play in the Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo was offered to Eintracht Frankfurt over the summer, a chief of the German club has claimed.

Ronaldo was desperate to leave Manchester United over the summer in order to continue playing Champions League football, but a move for him never materialized and he ended up staying at Old Trafford and playing in the Europa League.

He is now a free agent after his contract at Man United was terminated, with the unsanctioned interview with Piers Morgan where he criticized the club’s ownership and manager Erik ten Hag being the final straw.

Ronaldo is now likely to join Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr on a mammoth £175 million-a-year deal that would see him stay there until the summer of 2025.

Now, Eintracht Frankfurt have revealed that the Portuguese star was offered to the club as he was hoping to play at a Champions League club.

“He was even offered to us,” Axel Hellman, the club’s executive board member has been quoted by the Daily Mail.

Philip Holzer, chairman of the club’s supervisory board, added: “I have the feeling he was offered to every Champions League club.”

Frankfurt qualified for the Champions League group stage this season after winning last season’s Europa League, where they beat Rangers in the final.

That Champions League run has been quite fruitful as they finished second in their group behind Tottenham and are due to meet Napoli in the Round of 16 of the competition.

Ronaldo’s season hasn’t gone to plan. He was dropped by Erik ten Hag at Manchester United and was the second choice attacking option before his departure.

The same happened with the Portuguese national team at the World Cup as Portugal were knocked out by Morocco at the quarter-final stage.
