Edwards Reclaims Vital Position with Liverpool Owners FSG
Liverpool Football Club has made a significant move in reclaiming their place at the top of English football by appointing ex-sporting director Michael Edwards as the company’s chief executive of football. This decision comes after Edwards turned down a previous approach by Fenway Sports Group (FSG) to bring him back, following Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s announcement that he would be stepping down at the end of the season.
FSG president Mike Gordon expressed his admiration for Edwards, stating, “Michael is one of the most formidable executive talents in world football.” He further added, “He returns to us in a role with greater seniority than he held previously and with a wider remit. It was clear when we initially reached out to him that a broader scope would be a key motivating factor for any potential return to the industry. In this regard – and many others – his ambitions matched ours.”
Edwards, who joined Liverpool in 2011 and became sporting director in 2016, left the club in the summer of 2022. Despite receiving numerous offers to return to the game, including roles at Chelsea and Manchester United, Edwards declined and chose to explore other opportunities. However, FSG’s offer to bring him back included not only his appointment as chief executive of football but also his involvement in identifying and managing a second club.
“One of the biggest factors in my decision is the commitment to acquire and oversee an additional club, growing this area of their organization,” said Edwards. “I believe that to remain competitive, investment and expansion of the current football portfolio is necessary.”
Edwards has an impressive track record during his time as Liverpool’s sporting director, playing a crucial role in bringing in key players such as goalkeeper Alisson Becker, defender Virgil van Dijk, and forward Mohamed Salah. Under his guidance, Liverpool went on to win the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and ended their 30-year wait for a top-flight title by claiming the Premier League trophy in 2020.
With his appointment, Edwards will now oversee a restructure of football operations at Liverpool, which includes the search for a new sporting director. The club has been without a sporting director since Jorg Schmadtke’s departure in January, and Richard Hughes, Bournemouth’s technical director, is under consideration for the role.
