Eddie Howe Shares Thoughts on Controversial Newcastle United Win Over Arsenal
Eddie Howe’s Thoughts on Anthony Gordon’s Controversial Winner
Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, has shared his thoughts on Anthony Gordon’s controversial winner as his team defeated Arsenal 1-0 on Saturday.
Mikel Arteta’s Furious Reaction
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was left absolutely furious at the decision to award the goal, describing it as a ‘disgrace’ and ’embarrassing’ in a meltdown over VAR.
VAR Checks and Controversies
VAR officials took over four minutes to make the decision, running checks on three possible offenses. These included whether Gordon was offside, if the ball had gone out of play during the build-up, and if Magalhaes was fouled by Joelinton.
Eddie Howe’s Perspective
Asked for his thoughts on Newcastle’s winner, Howe told Sky Sports: ‘We’re in the dark, we’re stood by the side of the pitch seeing VAR on the screen but with no pictures. I haven’t seen anything other than what I saw at the time. It looked like a good goal to me.’
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Howe added: ‘Maybe Arteta has seen something I haven’t. I’ve only seen it live and from my angle, I had no idea what was going on. I had no idea what was going on with the VAR checks either. With every check that was happening, I was thinking they were going to find something wrong with it. Very bizarre to have three checks. But the goal was given and that’s all I know.’
No Communication with Arteta
Quizzed by a reporter if he had spoken to Arteta since the full-time whistle, Howe said: ‘Absolutely not. I’ve been speaking to you guys.’
