Eddie Howe’s Interest in England Job Revealed in 2016

Date:

Eddie Howe, the current manager of Newcastle United, has previously expressed his interest in managing the England national team. As Gareth Southgate steps down from his position as England manager, the Football Association (FA) is considering potential candidates for the role. Howe, who has had success with Newcastle in the north east, is liked by the FA, but there are doubts as to whether he would be willing to leave his current position.

In 2016, when Howe was the manager of Bournemouth, he was linked to the England job and gave an intriguing response when asked if he would consider taking the position. He said, “The England job is the ultimate, I would never say no.” This statement indicates Howe’s ambition and desire to manage the national team.

However, there are other contenders for the role. Graham Potter, the former Chelsea manager, is currently the bookies’ favorite with odds of 11/10. Howe and Under-21 boss Lee Carsley are also in the running, as the FA is likely to appoint an Englishman. If they decide to go for a non-English candidate, Mauricio Pochettino, the former manager of Tottenham and Chelsea, could be considered.

Another potential candidate is Thomas Tuchel, who has expressed interest in the England job after the 2022 World Cup. Tuchel’s name has been thrown into the ring, and his recent success with Chelsea could make him an attractive option for the FA.

When looking at Southgate’s record as England manager, it is clear that he has had both highs and lows. In his overall record of 102 games, Southgate has won 61, drawn 24, and lost 17. Under his leadership, England has scored 213 goals and conceded 72.

Some of Southgate’s notable achievements include leading England to two Euros finals and their first major final in 55 years during Euro 2020. The team’s victories over Colombia in the 2018 World Cup on penalties, Spain in the 2018 Nations League, and Senegal in the 2022 World Cup last 16 were also highlights of Southgate’s tenure.

However, there have also been disappointments, such as the World Cup semi-final defeat to Croatia in 2018 and the Euro 2020 final loss to Italy. The humiliating 0-4 defeat to Hungary in the Nations League in 2023 and the quarter-final loss to France in the 2022 World Cup were low points for Southgate.

As rumors circulate about potential successors to Southgate, more outlandish reports have linked Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola with the job. Frank Lampard has also been mentioned as a possible successor.

In terms of Eddie Howe’s potential appointment, it is worth noting that it could come at a high cost for the FA. They would need to negotiate a hefty compensation package with Newcastle to secure the services of the 46-year-old manager.

Overall, the search for Gareth Southgate’s successor as England manager is underway. Eddie Howe, with his previous interest in the job and success at Newcastle, could be a strong contender. However, other candidates like Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, and Thomas Tuchel are also being considered. Whoever takes on the role will inherit a team that has had both triumphs and disappointments under Southgate’s leadership.
