Eddie Howe is excited at what the Premier League season might hold for Newcastle after the World Cup break.
A run of five successive league wins mean the Magpies will return to action in third place and Howe was asked if he was excited by the possibility of qualifying for Europe.
‘Well, of course,’ said the Newcastle boss. ‘When you’re in our current position, you’d be foolish not to be, so yes, I’m excited by what can be, while respecting the quality of the league.’
Joe Willock grabbed the only goal midway through the second half of the Magpies’ victory over Chelsea, who were off-colour once again.
The Blues were left frustrated by the way Newcastle managed the closing stages of the game with Dan Burn and Kai Havertz involved in an angry confrontation after full-time.
‘I know it wasn’t pure football, the last part of the game,’ said Howe.
‘I’ve got no issue with that. I thought our players handled themselves really, really well.
‘But I just think that’s Premier League football. It’s everything to these players and I think that showed.’
