You expect drama in a final-day winner-takes-all title decider, a lively atmosphere, and excitement. But you probably don’t expect three goals in the first 12 minutes, four in the opening 17, and five in 34 – all resulting in a 3-3 scoreline at half time. Dundee manager Gary Bowyer said “you couldn’t script it better”, and he was right – what unfolded in front of the BBC Scotland cameras at Ochilview was nothing short of astonishing.
Dundee went into the game top by two points, and a draw was enough for Bowyer’s men to secure the title. Queen’s Park, however, needed a win to return to the top flight for the first time since 1958. Lyall Cameron capitalised on dodgy defending and laid the ball on a plate for Alex Jakubiak to give Dundee the lead, but six minutes later Charlie Fox scored an incredible strike on the bounce from 30 yards out to level the score.
Queen’s then took the lead again as Connor Shields hammered in on the volley, but Lee Ashcroft swept the ball in for Dundee to make it 2-2. Zach Robinson then put Dundee ahead with a scrappy goal before Fox scored his second of the evening to make it 3-3.
Nine minutes into the second period, Lyall Cameron guided in a fourth for Dundee and goal number seven of the match. Luke McCowan then sealed the title with a peach of an effort into the far corner. Dundee had won an epic Scottish Championship title-clinching victory over Queen’s Park. It was a fitting finish to an unforgettable Championship finale – one that you really couldn’t script better.
