Christian Pulisic admitted he was left ‘dumbfounded and very disappointed’ by a decision Thomas Tuchel took during their Champions League winning season.
Pulisic has revealed what happened when he was left on the bench for Chelsea’s semi-final second leg against Real Madrid back in 2021.
He scored in the first leg in a 1-1 draw in Spain, but was furious he did not start the second leg back at Stamford Bridge.
Pulisic wrote in his upcoming book ‘Christian Pulisic: My Journey So Far’: “What happened before that game was hugely disappointing for me.
“l’d had a really good first leg performance and our following match was against Fulham in the league. Tuchel told me that he was resting me for the second leg and as a result I didn’t play a single minute in the Fulham game.
“Then on match day of the second semi, Tuchel tells me he’s changed his mind and he’s going with Kai [Havertz].
“I honestly was dumbfounded and very disappointed. I thought that I’d earned a start and, most importantly, he had assured me previously I was going to start.”
The friction between Pulisic and Tuchel was evident, with the USA international’s dad saying his son’s situation was ‘sad’.
There was speculation the forward could also leave Stamford Bridge over the summer, having been linked with a move to Manchester United that never materialised.
However, Pulisic may now have a future at the club with Tuchel being sacked in September and replaced by Graham Potter.
