Donny van de Beek Opens Up On His Manchester United Future
Much was expected of Donny van de Beek when he completed a £40m move from Ajax to Manchester United in 2020, but the Dutchman has underwhelmed at Old Trafford. Van de Beek was a key member of the Ajax side that won the Eredivisie title in 2019 and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. However, his form has largely disappeared since he arrived at United, with the 26-year-old making just 34 Premier League appearances for the club across three seasons.
Van de Beek has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer and he scored the only goal in a 1-0 pre-season friendly win over Lyon on Wednesday. After the match, the Netherlands international opened up about his future.
“For now, it’s hard to say where my future is,” Van de Beek said. “I’ve come back now after injury and I’m fit now, so I play my first minutes after training for a few weeks, so I try to push as hard as possible. Every day [something] can happen, so it’s hard to say now where my future will be. In football you never know, especially with me, so let’s see what happens.”
When asked if he could potentially stay at United, Van de Beek said: “Yeah, but it’s also a possibility that I move, so everything is open. It’s hard to say now where my future is. I’m focussing on getting as fit as possible and pushing on.”
Van de Beek is under contract until 2025 with the option to extend for a further year, but his future remains uncertain. The midfielder has been linked with a move to Roma, managed by former United boss Jose Mourinho, but it remains to be seen if he will stay at Old Trafford or move on this summer.
Van de Beek has struggled to make an impact at United since his arrival and his future at the club is far from certain. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the Dutchman, but one thing is for sure – he will be hoping to make an impression at Old Trafford before the end of the season.
