Washington’s Star Running Back, Dillon Johnson, Expected to Play in National Championship Game Against Michigan
Washington’s star running back, Dillon Johnson, reaggravated an injury during the College Football Playoff semifinal against Texas. However, coach Kalen DeBoer expects Johnson to play in Monday’s national championship game against Michigan.
According to DeBoer, Johnson has been working through this injury for a couple of months now. He has been playing through it and has shown resilience by shaking it off and returning to the game. DeBoer believes that Johnson will be ready to go for the championship game, despite the quick turnaround of only seven days. The team will be smart with their preparation and assume that Johnson will be on the field.
X-rays for Johnson came back negative, according to offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. However, quarterback Michael Penix Jr. has not been informed about Johnson’s availability yet.
DeBoer expressed confidence in Johnson’s commitment to the team, stating that he has put his heart and soul into this season. If Johnson is unable to play, the team has other players ready to step up.
Johnson had a strong performance in the semifinal game against Texas, rushing for two touchdowns and 49 yards on 21 attempts. However, he was helped off the field during Washington’s last drive as he couldn’t put any pressure on his left foot. This is a recurring injury that he suffered against Oregon State in November.
Johnson has been a key player for Washington this season, rushing for 1,162 yards and 16 touchdowns. His emergence at running back has been vital for the team’s offense. In the national championship game, the Huskies will need to force Michigan to defend the run, opening up more space in the passing game. Johnson’s workload has far exceeded that of any other Washington player in the backfield.
While Washington’s rushing statistics may not be impressive on a national scale, Johnson’s contributions have been crucial. He has been effective in running the ball, averaging 4.42 yards per rush, and has scored 16 rushing touchdowns.
DeBoer praised Johnson’s performance and his chemistry with the offensive line. He also highlighted Johnson’s ability in pass protection, keeping the pocket clean for the quarterback. If Johnson is unable to play, it will make Michigan’s defensive job easier.
Washington is hoping to win its first national championship since 1991. Johnson’s availability will play a significant role in the team’s success in the championship game.
