Dele Alli spent Christmas Day on the bench for Besiktas as an unused substitute in Super Lig draw with Gaziantep

Dele Alli spent Christmas on the bench for Besiktas during their 1-1 draw against Gaziantep as his spell there continues to worsen.

The midfielder has had a complex loan spell in Turkey with Besiktas and his most recent match was an indication of the difficulties he’s been facing at the club.

In a cup clash against a third division team last week, he was substituted after 28 minutes and was booed by some fans after an underwhelming display.

Alli then took to social media to reassure fans that he is still committed to the club and still loves the game but he has to improve to get more time on the pitch.

He would’ve hoped to show some of his form and commitment in the Christmas Day fixture between Besiktas and Gaziantep, but he didn’t get that chance as he was an unused substitute.

Alli has been struggling to show his best for several years having once been one of English football’s brightest prospects when he was emerging at Tottenham.

Since the end of Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure, Alli has struggled to replicate that and has been out of favour under managers that succeeded the Argentine like Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte.

There was hope he could get back to his best while at Everton last year, but that didn’t happen, and it’s been much of the same in his short time in Turkey with Besiktas.

While he was unused substitute against Gaziantep, his Besiktas teammates managed to snatch a draw with fellow former Premier League players Arthur Masuaku and Wout Weghorst combining for the equaliser.

Alli will want to use this as motivation for the rest of the season and hope he can show some of his qualities in his final months while on loan at Besiktas.
