Dele Alli misses open goal from three yards as Everton embarrassed 4-0 by MLS side Minnesota and Frank Lampard issues warning to players

Everton had a night to forget as they were thrashed 4-0 by MLS side Minnestoa United.

It was a miserable evening for Frank Lampard’s side, who conceded three goals before half-time.

Lampard would not have been impressed with what he saw

Another goal after the break compounded their misery on a humiliating evening.

Everton‘s dismal day was summed up by Dele Alli missing an open goal from three yards out.

Although it was a pre-season friendly, and the result does not count for anything, Lampard warned that his side need to be better if they want to avoid another relegation scrap.

He said: “The players have to work and understand we were in a relegation battle for a big portion of last season.

“We had an amazing night (against Crystal Palace) and an amazing run, but as soon as that finished, I put it to bed very quickly, so the players have to put it to bed as well, because we were in that fight for a reason.

“If we don’t want to be in that situation again, they have to be better and I have to be better.

Alli somehow missed from three yards out

“As a club, it (the Minnesota game) reinforced the situation in terms of what we need to do with the squad, because it has to be stronger than what we saw tonight.

“The players in the dressing room need to understand that they’ve put in a very poor performance individually and collectively.”

Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders said we have to take the result with a pinch of salt, because they may have had hard training the previous day.

He told talkSPORT: “They might just go ‘what we’re going to do is have a 12-minute run today and don’t worry about the game tomorrow, you’ll play 45 minutes each’.

“It affects the performance, so you’re not really worried. It is a bit embarrassing that scoreline, though.”

Everton still have friendlies with Blackpool and Dinamo Kyiv before the season starts

Ex-Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor feared that the Toffees are in for another relegation fight and they may regret selling Richarlison.

He told talkSPORT Breakfast: “I think Richarlison is going to affect them more than people think. He kept them up last season with his goals.

“To lose him and not replace him is a big risk. You shouldn’t be losing 4-0 to Minnesota.

“Yes the conditions are very hot over there. It’s pre-season so you can’t go into much details, but after last season Everton would want a top pre-season under their belts, especially with the season starting in two weeks.”
