Vera Pauw: Republic of Ireland Manager Rejects Allegations of Inappropriate Behavior
The Republic of Ireland women’s national football team is set to make history this summer, as they prepare to compete in their first major tournament. However, the team’s manager, Vera Pauw, has recently been the subject of allegations from her time as manager of the Houston Dash in 2018. Pauw has strongly rejected the claims and received strong backing from her current employers, the Football Association of Ireland.
Vera Pauw: A Manager with a History of Success
Vera Pauw is a Dutch football manager who has had a long and successful career. She has managed teams in the Netherlands, Scotland, Russia, and the United States. In 2018, she was appointed manager of the Houston Dash in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
Allegations of Inappropriate Behavior at Houston Dash
In December 2020, a report was released alleging that Pauw had “shamed players for their weight” and “attempted to exert excessive control over eating habits” during her time as manager of the Houston Dash. Pauw strongly rejected these claims, describing them as an “insult to my personal values”.
The allegations were reignited on Monday when The Athletic published an article specifically looking at Pauw’s time as manager of the Houston Dash. The article included claims from ex-Dash players and staff that Pauw had body shamed players and behaved inappropriately.
Pauw Responds to Allegations
At a news conference on Wednesday, Pauw strongly refuted the allegations. She said: “How can you defend yourself against a lie? I need to have my full energy for these players. And many players came to me to support and to ask what crap or nonsense it was because they know me so differently – as well as from all the other teams that I’ve been coaching.”
Pauw also addressed a tweet from one of the journalists who worked on The Athletic’s story, which claimed that Pauw had approached the outlet in April about “protecting coaches from players”. Pauw dismissed this claim, saying it was The Athletic who came to her with a survey and she responded before asking when “double-standards” would be investigated.
Support for Pauw from Current Players
The Republic of Ireland’s captain, Katie McCabe, said that the players support Pauw following the latest allegations but it has been a “real negative distraction” before the match against France. She said: “Our sole focus has to be fine-tuned in on that. We have built something over the past two and a half years. The timing of the release of the article, it is what it is, but it’s obviously frustrating because this is such a massive time in Ireland for women’s football.”
McCabe also said that she has clashed with Pauw many times but they are always professional enough to ensure they are fully focused on the team. She said: “It is something that we have worked through together. We have argued, of course, like you are never going to get on 100% with your manager at times. She pushed me and I push her. In my opinion and in my own personal relationship with Vera, we have clashed many a times but we are always professional enough to ensure we are fully focused on the team and we know both of our hearts are in the right place in terms of what is best for Ireland’s women’s national team going forward.”
Conclusion
Vera Pauw has been a successful manager throughout her career and has been instrumental in leading the Republic of Ireland women’s national football team to their first major tournament. Despite recent allegations against her from her time as manager of the Houston Dash, Pauw has strongly rejected them and received strong backing from her current employers, the Football Association of Ireland. The current players have also expressed their support for Pauw and their commitment to focusing on their upcoming World Cup match against France.
