Declan Rice apologises to West Ham fans after penalty is saved in defeat to Nottingham Forest as stat shows Hammers star’s poor Premier League spot-kick record

Declan Rice issued an apology to West Ham fans after his penalty was saved during their defeat at Nottingham Forest.

The Hammers fell to a 1-0 defeat to the Premier League new boys, with Taiwo Awoniyi netting the winner just before half time.

David Moyes’ men had their fair share of chances in the match and thought they’d taken the lead when Said Benrahma struck home but the goal was disallowed for an infringement by Michail Antonio in the build-up.

But their best opportunity came midway through the second half when they were awarded a penalty.

Rice stepped up to take the kick but his effort was saved by an inspired Dean Henderson in the Forest goal.

The West Ham and England midfielder has now missed two of the three penalties he’s taken in the Premier League and Rice apologised after the match finished.

“Can only apologise for the penalty miss, thought we created enough to get something from the game. We go again and stay together,” Rice tweeted.

“Head up, @_DeclanRice. We go again Thursday [fist bump emoji],” West Ham’s Twitter account responded.

It was an unfortunate moment for Rice but Forest’s winner, which happened at the same end of the pitch, had a great deal of fortune to it.

Lingard’s goalbound effort was blocked by Ben Johnson, the ball then rebounding straight to Awoniyi before trickling into the net.

On Awoniyi’s goal, Forest boss Steve Cooper told talkSPORT: “An assist from Jesse too, which is nice.

“You want your strikers to score goals, I though Taiwo was a real handful today in the first half and he caused West Ham a lot of problems with his movement and his attitude to the game.

“Strikers have to be in those positions, sometimes they’re a little bit fortunate with how it went in but he just needed to be up and running.”

Cooper added: “We had a poor result last week [against Newcastle] and we didn’t play well but we actually took a little bit of confidence from some of the things we did.

“It was really good that we took them into the training week and then into the game, so really happy with that.”
