David Moyes Fumes Over Thiago Handball at Anfield

David Moyes was visibly frustrated with referee Chris Kavanagh’s decision not to award a late penalty after Thiago appeared to handle the ball in the area during Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over West Ham at the London Stadium. Moyes told BT Sport in his post-match interview: “It’s a penalty kick. The player lunges in the box which is different from a slip or trying to break your fall. When you’re lunging in the box and you know your arm is out, it’s a penalty kick, yeah.” He marched straight to Kavanagh at full time to remonstrate over the decision and even questioned whether Liverpool would have received the same treatment had the incident happened at Anfield. Later in his post-match press conference, Moyes added that he felt a level of “disrespect” from the VAR after it was deduced that the referee’s verdict would not be overturned. Liverpool’s victory gave them a third successive win for the first time since November, with the side beginning to build some momentum heading into the remaining games of the season.
