David de Gea Prepared to Join Newcastle United After Nick Pope’s Injury Blow
Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is ready to join Newcastle United as a replacement for the injured Nick Pope.
Pope’s Injury Blow
The Magpies’ number one goalkeeper, Nick Pope, suffered a dislocated shoulder in the recent 1-0 win over Erik ten Hag’s side. It has been determined that Pope will require surgery and will likely be out of action for at least four months.
Consideration for De Gea
Martin Dubravka came on as a replacement for Pope in the match against United, with Loris Karius also available as a backup. However, Newcastle is strongly considering bringing in another goalkeeper, with David de Gea under consideration.
De Gea’s Free Agent Status
De Gea was released by Manchester United after spending 12 years at Old Trafford and is currently a free agent. In the summer, there were reports that the Spanish goalkeeper preferred a return to Spain, and he has recently been linked with a move to join Inter Miami in the MLS.
Despite this, De Gea has been seen in Manchester in recent weeks, sparking speculation about a potential return to the club, especially with his replacement Andre Onana struggling.
According to ESPN, the 33-year-old goalkeeper has been training regularly and is open to a move to Newcastle.
Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale has also been linked with a move to Newcastle as a potential replacement for Pope. Ramsdale, who has lost his place in Mikel Arteta’s starting XI this season, is reportedly open to the move in order to secure first-team football ahead of Euro 2024.
When asked about Ramsdale’s future, Arteta did not rule out a possible January exit but stated that the goalkeeper wants to play for Arsenal and hopes to improve in order to secure his place in the England squad.
“He’s willing to play. Like any player, he wants to play for Arsenal. That’s what he wants to do,” Arteta said. “As well for England, it’s not like he has started a lot of games, so hopefully we can help him be better here so then he can play for England. We want to be better, so we want to add to what we already have. That’s the intention.”
Arteta also refused to rule out a mid-season move for Ramsdale.
