MLS has issued a six-game suspension to New York Red Bulls forward Dante Vanzeir for using a racist remark during Saturday’s match against the San Jose Earthquakes. The Belgian, 24, has also been handed an unspecified fine and will be required to participate in additional league-mandated training and education sessions, as well as a restorative practices programme.
The ban applies to MLS games, but also prohibits Vanzeir from appearing in US Open Cup games, MLS Next Pro games and exhibition games during the duration of the suspension. Red Bulls coach Gerhard Struber has not received a fine or suspension from MLS, but has apologised for not immediately removing Vanzeir from the game when asked to do so by San Jose coach Luchi Gonzalez.
Play was stopped for 15 minutes after a confrontation involving Vanzeir, who issued an apology on Tuesday and announced he would “step away” from the club until further notice to avoid “distractions”. The incident has sparked outrage among fans and players alike, with many calling for a harsher punishment.
The MLS disciplinary committee has taken a strong stance against racism, and the six-game suspension is a clear indication that they are not willing to tolerate such behaviour. It remains to be seen how Vanzeir will respond to the punishment, but it is clear that he must take responsibility for his actions and learn from this experience.
