Danny Murphy Cannot Understand Arsenal’s Move for David Raya
Ex-England midfielder Danny Murphy admits he is baffled by Arsenal’s shock move for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya. The Gunners have expressed interest in signing Raya to provide cover and competition for Arsenal No. 1 Aaron Ramsdale. Raya’s current deal with Brentford expires next summer and the club are keen to cash in during this transfer window as he has made it clear he will not sign a contract extension.
Brentford have slapped a £40m asking price on the 27-year-old, who has made 62 Premier League appearances and helped the Bees finish in the top-half of the table last season.
Danny Murphy Questions Arsenal’s Move for David Raya
Murphy cannot understand Arsenal’s interest in Raya, however, and says a move to the Emirates Stadium also makes little sense for the Spaniard.
‘The Arsenal thing, I’m really struggling with that,’ Murphy told talkSPORT when asked about the speculation around Brentford shot-stopper Raya.
‘If you go and get him, what does it say to Aaron Ramsdale? Why do you need to pay £40m for a goalkeeper if you’re not going to start him? And from the flip side, if you’re David Raya, your next move has to be to a club where you’ll be number one. There’s no way he’s going to go somewhere and be happy with being the No. 2. The only way you get him in is if you say he’s starting.’
Arsenal Strengthen Squad Ahead of Next Season
Arsenal have bolstered Mikel Arteta’s squad this summer with the signings of England midfielder Declan Rice, Netherlands defender Jurrien Timber and Germany star Kai Havertz. The Gunners are looking to build on a promising season in which they finished second in the Premier League, five points behind treble-winners Manchester City.
Conclusion
Danny Murphy cannot understand Arsenal’s move for David Raya, questioning why the Gunners would pay £40m for a goalkeeper who would not be guaranteed to start. Arsenal have been active in the transfer window this summer, signing Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz as they look to build on last season’s second place finish in the Premier League.
