Dani Alves Accused of Rape and Faces Nine Years in Jail
Footballer Dani Alves, a former Brazil and Barcelona defender, is facing serious charges of rape. Prosecutors are demanding that he spends nine years in jail and pays his victim £130,000, according to court papers. The 40-year-old married athlete has been in custody without bail since his arrest in January.
The allegations against Dani Alves were initially referred to as a “sexual assault,” but the seven-page pre-trial indictment released in Spain yesterday reveals the charges of rape.
In a previous statement, Dani Alves admitted to having consensual sex with a woman in a private toilet at a Barcelona nightclub in December. However, the victim claims that he refused to let her leave the cubicle and slapped her face.
Dani Alves has publicly apologized to his wife, Joana Sanz, for cheating on her.
