Footballer Dani Alves Faces Rape Charges and Possible Jail Time
Dani Alves, a 40-year-old former Brazil and Barcelona defender, is currently in custody without bail following his arrest in January. Prosecutors are now accusing him of rape and are demanding a nine-year prison sentence, along with a £130,000 payment to the victim. The details of the case were revealed in a seven-page pre-trial indictment released in Spain.
The allegations against Dani Alves were initially referred to as a “sexual assault” until the recent release of the pre-trial indictment. The incident reportedly took place in a private toilet at a Barcelona nightclub in December. Alves has admitted to having sex with the woman but claims it was consensual. However, the victim alleges that he prevented her from leaving the cubicle and even slapped her.
Alves has publicly apologized to his wife, Joana Sanz, for his infidelity. He expressed remorse and asked for forgiveness both privately and publicly, acknowledging the impact his actions have had on their relationship.
