New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is listed as questionable with a neck injury and has “a chance” to play in Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders. Jones missed the previous game against the Buffalo Bills and has been limited in practice throughout the week. Although he has not been cleared for contact, there is hope that he could return to the field.
If Jones is unable to play, Tyrod Taylor will make his second consecutive start for the Giants. In his first start against the Bills, Taylor completed 24-of-36 passes for 200 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Regardless of who starts at quarterback, they will face the challenge of playing behind a makeshift offensive line.
The Giants have been dealing with injuries on their offensive line, with left tackle Josh Ezeudu placed on injured reserve due to a toe injury. To address the issue, the team signed three players off practice squads: Justin Pugh, Tyre Phillips, and Josh Miles. Additionally, starting left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring), center John Michael Schmitz Jr (shoulder), and tackle Matt Peart (shoulder) did not practice and have been ruled out for Sunday’s game. Starting right tackle Evan Neal (ankle) is listed as questionable after missing Friday’s practice.
The constant changes and injuries on the offensive line have made it difficult for the Giants to establish consistency and protect their quarterbacks. Running back Saquon Barkley acknowledged the challenges faced by the offensive line but expressed confidence in their ability to improve once everyone is healthy and playing together.
Barkley himself returned to action last week after missing three games with a high ankle sprain. He participated in limited practices throughout the week and is expected to play against the Commanders.
While it seems unlikely that Jones will play given his lack of team reps this week, coach Brian Daboll did not completely rule out his participation. Daboll emphasized Jones’ experience in the system and stated that the team would gather all the necessary information before making a decision.
This is not the first time Jones has dealt with a neck injury. In 2022, he had a disk problem that caused him to miss the final six games of the season. However, Jones has expressed confidence that this injury is different and believes he is close to returning to the field.
Overall, the Giants’ quarterback situation remains uncertain heading into Sunday’s game against the Commanders. While Jones has a chance to play, Taylor is prepared to step in if needed. The offensive line will also face challenges with multiple starters ruled out due to injuries. Despite these obstacles, the Giants remain hopeful that they can overcome adversity and secure a victory.
