Chicago Cubs Make Roster Moves Ahead of Tender Deadline
The Chicago Cubs have made several roster moves as they prepare for the upcoming season. The team non-tendered three injured relief pitchers, while tendering contracts to key players from their 2023 campaign. Additionally, they have reached a one-year deal with Patrick Wisdom, although the terms of the contract have not been disclosed.
Patrick Wisdom’s Value Goes Beyond Batting Average
Despite hitting just .205 last season, Patrick Wisdom’s true value lies in his power at the plate. With a .295 ISO and a 36.8 percent strikeout rate, Wisdom may struggle to make contact, but when he does, he hits the ball as hard as anyone in the game. His 19.2 percent barrel rate is among the best in baseball, with only Shohei Ohtani surpassing him in that category.
While Wisdom’s defense at third base suffered last season, he proved to be an offensive weapon when used in the right matchups. In the second half of the season, he posted a 147 wRC+, showcasing his potential as a power hitter. With new manager Craig Counsell known for maximizing his roster’s abilities, Wisdom could prove to be a valuable asset for the Cubs.
Relief Pitchers Non-Tendered
The Cubs have decided not to tender contracts to three injured relief pitchers. Codi Heuer, Ethan Roberts, and Brandon Hughes will all be looking for new opportunities. Heuer, who was acquired from the Chicago White Sox in a trade, missed the 2022 season due to Tommy John surgery and suffered a setback during his rehab. Hughes struggled with injuries throughout the 2023 season but is expected to return on a minor-league deal. Roberts is recovering from Tommy John surgery and should be back in action in 2024.
Key Players Tendered Contracts
In addition to Patrick Wisdom, the Cubs have tendered contracts to several key players. Adbert Alzolay, Julian Merryweather, Mark Leither Jr., Mike Tauchman, and Justin Steele will all be returning for the upcoming season. Alzolay took on the closer’s role, Merryweather showed promise as a setup man, and Leiter was a reliable right-handed reliever. Tauchman provided a much-needed on-base threat in the lineup, while Steele emerged as the team’s ace.
Looking Ahead
The Cubs have trimmed their 40-man roster to 37 players ahead of the tender deadline. While they remained quiet during the deadline, it is expected that they will be active in the upcoming offseason. With Thanksgiving approaching, the team is likely to make more moves and generate buzz in the baseball world.
