Crystal Palace are very close to signing Bayern Munich defender Chris Richards for an initial £10million which could rise to £17m after add-ons.

The transfer has moved very quickly, having been first reported on just earlier this week and now Richards has arrived in South London to complete his medical.

Personal terms have already been agreed on a five-year deal and The Athletic report that the player has spoken with manager Patrick Vieira over his role within the team.

While predominantly a centre-back, Richards is capable of playing across the backline and will likely be deployed in various positions with Palace a little short in the defensive department.

Although the Eagles currently have an excellent centre-back duo of Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen, as well as the impressive Tyrick Mitchell at left-back, they lack any quality back-up options, while at right-back both Nathaniel Clyne and Joel Ward are in their 30s and in need of upgrading.

There is also talk that Vieira wants to have the option to play with a back-three in the upcoming season, and the Eagles were linked with Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill, but with many other Premier League sides keen on the 19-year-old, it appears they have dropped that interest.

After coming through the FC Dallas academy, Richards moved to Bayern in 2018 but would play just 10 senior games for the Bundesliga giants, spending the last 18 months out on loan at Hoffenheim.

Despite impressing during that time, the recent £68m signing of Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus had rendered the 22-year-old surplus to requirements and although there was plenty of interest in the American international from within Germany, it is Palace who have secured his signature.

He is set to become Vieira’s fourth signing of the summer following goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, winger Malcolm Ebiowei and midfielder Cheick Doucoure.
