Cristiano Ronaldo’s Tearful Exit: A Disappointing End to His Record-Breaking Euros Career

Date:

Cristiano Ronaldo’s record-breaking Euros career came to an end in a disappointing fashion. In his sixth Euros, he failed to score a goal and missed a crucial penalty against Slovenia. The match against France was his last chance to make an impact, but he was largely anonymous. It was Joao Felix’s missed penalty that ultimately sealed Portugal’s fate and sent them packing.

Kylian Mbappe, who idolizes Ronaldo, watched from the bench after sustaining an injury. Despite his absence, France managed to secure a spot in the semi-finals, although they have yet to score a goal from open play in the tournament.

The match between Portugal and France was a struggle for both teams to find the back of the net. The focus was on Ronaldo and Mbappe, but it was the defenders who stood out. Mike Maignan, William Saliba, and the experienced Pepe were excellent throughout the game.

Portugal entered the match unchanged from their previous penalty shootout victory over Slovenia, while France made two changes, one of which was enforced due to a suspension.

The first half of the match was turgid, with neither team creating clear-cut chances. Portugal dominated possession, while France looked dangerous on the break. Bruno Fernandes had the first effort of the game, but it was deflected behind. Theo Hernandez also attempted a shot from distance, but it was easily saved.

At halftime, fans were still waiting for the match to come alive. Portugal showed glimpses of attractive play, but Saliba was impressive in snuffing out their attacks. Mbappe looked livelier after the break and had a chance on goal, but his shot was saved by the Portuguese goalkeeper.

Just as Portugal started to assert dominance, France had an opportunity to score. However, Ruben Dias blocked Jules Kounde’s shot, and Nuno Mendes stopped Mbappe moments later.

Deschamps sensed that there was space opening up and brought on Ousmane Dembele as a substitute. Dembele should have provided an assist within minutes, but Eduardo Camavinga fired past the far post.

As the game entered extra time, both teams knew it was do or die. Ronaldo had a clear chance to score but missed the target. Pepe made a crucial block to deny Mbappe, and Dayot Upamecano blocked a shot from Rafael Leao.

Mbappe, still feeling the effects of his broken nose, was substituted at halftime in extra time. Portugal gained momentum, with Felix and Mendes having chances to win the game, but they couldn’t convert.

The match ultimately went to penalties, with Portugal’s Joao Felix hitting the post, the only miss of the shootout. France emerged as the victors, leaving Pepe in tears.

Overall, it was a disappointing end to Ronaldo’s Euros career, but France’s victory keeps their hopes alive in the tournament. Both teams struggled to find the back of the net throughout the match, despite their attacking talent. The defenders stood out, with Maignan, Saliba, and Pepe putting in excellent performances.
