Cristiano Ronaldo left out of Manchester United starting line-up for Premier League game at Chelsea as Marcus Rashford starts and Jadon Sancho retains his place

Cristiano Ronaldo began Manchester United’s starting XI for their trip to Premier League leaders Chelsea on the bench.

Caretaker boss Michael Carrick opted to leave the Portuguese star, who’s started eight of nine league matches since coming back to Man United, out at Stamford Bridge.

It’s a brave decision to bench Ronaldo, who has 10 goals in 15 matches for Man United this season

The game is set to be Carrick’s final match in charge before Ralf Rangnick takes the reins until the end of the season.

And Carrick’s team may well have a change in formation to what Red Devils fans are used to with Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho the only recognised forwards in the starting XI.

Carrick said: “A few tweaks and changes to freshen things up. Cristiano Ronaldo is your standout name [to be on the bench]. I have had a good chat with Cristiano and he was great.”

The midfield is made up of Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic and Fred, while Alex Telles, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are in defence.

Can Carrick maintain his 100 per cent win rate as Man United boss?

As for Chelsea, Thomas Tuchel has made three changes from their thrashing of Juventus in the Champions League.

Marcos Alonso comes in for injured Ben Chilwell, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek starts in place of N’Golo Kante, who also has an injury.

Timo Werner returns to the starting line-up too, replacing Christian Pulisic in attack.

Below you can see how both sides line-up.

Chelsea: Mendy, Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, James, Loftus-Cheek, Jorginho, Alonso, Ziyech, Hudson-Odoi, Werner

Subs: Arrizabalaga, Christensen, Lukaku, Pulisic, Saul, Barkley, Mount, Azpilicueta, Havertz

Manchester United: De Gea, Wan Bissaka, Lindelof, Bailly, Alex Telles, Fred, Matic, McTominay, Bruno Fernandes, Rashford, Sancho

Subs: Jones, Ronaldo, Mata, Martial, Greenwood, Lingard, Dalot, Henderson, Van de Beek
