‘Cristiano Ronaldo has to start’ – Erik ten Hag urged to play Portugal superstar for Manchester United’s clash with Arsenal

Erik ten Hag has been told to start Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United’s clash with Arsenal on Sunday.

The Red Devils face a tough test against the in form Gunners, who have five wins out of five so far this season.

Ten Hag’s side are showing glimpses of improvement and are on a run of three straight victories themselves.

The Dutchman will be under pressure to deliver now after being backed with more than £200million in transfers.

Antony completed his £85m move on deadline day, while Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia all joined over the summer.

Ronaldo ended up staying despite wanting to leave the club to play Champions League football.

The 37-year-old has started just one of the five Premier League matches so far this season, having to be content with a regular place on the bench.

Ten Hag admitted he is not in the starting line-up because of missing the entirety of pre-season, therefore also lacking match fitness.

Ahead of the Arsenal game, the United boss said: “I will be his friend, sometimes I will be his teacher,” he said. “It depends on the situation.

“But, as we all know, he didn’t have the pre-season and you cannot miss the pre-season.

“It is a base, especially in the game we play, the way of play. We play another type in comparison with last year.

“It depends on the demands, cooperation and it demands certain positioning, in and out of position, and the other thing is fitness.”

The United Stand host, and talkSPORT regular, Mark Goldbridge urged Ten Hag to start against the Gunners.

He said: “Will Casemiro or Ronaldo start? For me, the midfield has been doing well, but Casemiro is one of the best defensive midfielders in the world.

“It’s a huge risk not to bring him into the dynamic of that midfield.

“And Cristiano Ronaldo has to start. [Marcus] Rashford down the middle doesn’t work for me, he’s better off the left.

“Elanga is better off the bench. Cristiano Ronaldo brings that aura, brings the goals and he needs to start.

“Let’s hope that is the line-up for Manchester United. We need to turn things around.

“Those first two losses to Brentford and Brighton really set us back. We are on a run now, which could come short now if we lose to Arsenal.”
