Rio Ferdinand insists Cristiano Ronaldo was fully aware of Jamie Carragher’s divisive comments on the Manchester United star’s future and wanted to ‘humiliate’ the Liverpool legend.

Erik ten Hag made the biggest call of his tenure to date by axing last season’s top goalscorer, as well as captain Harry Maguire, for the visit of Jurgen Klopp’s side to Old Trafford last night.

After consecutive defeats against Brighton and Brentford, Ten Hag made four changes overall to his starting line-up and the United manager was, ultimately, thoroughly vindicated.

Goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford ensured a 2-1 win, but the slender margin of victory hardly reflect United’s dominance and Jurgen Klopp’s men had little answer to the frenetic tempo set by the home side.

Ronaldo entered the fray with little over 10 minutes remaining and helped his side cling onto the lead after Mohamed Salah had halved the deficit with a close-range header.

Despite United’s victory, Ronaldo’s omission from the starting line-up continued to dominate the post-match narrative with Ten Hag insisting the 37-year-old still has a role to play for him this season.

Whether Ronaldo will be happy to play second fiddle to his younger teammates remains to be seen with Carragher among several high-profile pundits of the view that United would be better off without their talisman.

Ronaldo appeared aware of those comments when he blanked Carragher during the pre-match warm-up as he walked over to greet his former teammates Roy Keane and Gary Neville.

Ferdinand, another former colleague of Ronaldo’s, claimed the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is obsessed by the media’s perception of him and would have wanted to ‘humiliate’ Carragher on live television.

He told Vibe: ‘Knowing Cristiano Ronaldo, Jamie Carragher’s been very vocal about Cristiano Ronaldo being the problem and stuff like that.

‘Trust me, Cristiano would’ve seen those comments and would’ve been thinking walking over there I’ll just let this guy know with a little… he needs to kind of calm him down, humiliate him and show him up, whatever way you want to dress it up live on TV.

‘Cristiano is very calculated, he’s very aware of what’s going on, he’s not somebody who sits at home and switches off.

‘I’ve always said this, he uses social media and people’s comments as fuel to drive him on to be the best he’s done that since he was a young kid.

‘Anyone who spoke bad about him in the media he knew about it. He mentioned Gary Lineker to me once about stuff because Gary Lineker is a massive Messi fan.

‘I was thinking bro you’re not even in this country how are you seeing the footage. He knows everything.

‘For Jamie Carragher to continually call him out, he’s got a right to his own opinion Jamie, but Cristiano will take that personally.

‘He’s an emotional guy and he’ll show that his actions were no surprise to me. I find it funny, I find it hilarious to be honest.’
