Rangers coach Craig McPherson has issued a sincere apology for his actions in headbutting Celtic boss Fran Alonso after a dramatic 1-1 draw in the Scottish Women’s Premier League on Monday. McPherson has been cited by the Scottish FA and says he will “accept in full” any punishment he receives.
In a statement, McPherson said: “I would like to offer a full and unreserved apology for my actions. I know I have severely let myself, our team, and the club down. I hold myself to the highest of standards and have never done anything like this before in a long coaching career, and I know I fell way short of those with my actions.”
McPherson has since spoken to Alonso in a “lengthy conversation” and expressed regret for any negativity his actions may have brought to the women’s game. He is due to face an Scottish FA hearing on 13 April.
The incident occurred after Celtic had rescued a point with the last kick of the match by Caitlin Hayes to remain second in the SWPL, eight points behind leaders Glasgow City. As players and staff were shaking hands, McPherson butted Alonso from behind.
McPherson has acknowledged his mistake and is taking responsibility for his actions. He is committed to learning from this incident and ensuring it does not happen again. He has also vowed to work hard to make sure that his behaviour does not detract from the progress being made in the women’s game.
