Crackdown: UK to Ban 1,600 Football Hooligans from Traveling during Euros
As excitement builds for the upcoming Euros this summer, the UK government is taking measures to ensure that the tournament remains a safe and enjoyable experience for all. In a bid to crack down on football hooliganism and drug-related issues, more than 1,600 individuals will be banned from leaving Britain during the tournament.
Under the new law, these hooligans and drug users will be required to surrender their passports to the police, preventing them from traveling to the host nation, Germany. Failure to comply with this order can result in a hefty penalty of six months imprisonment or an unlimited fine.
Policing minister Chris Philp emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful atmosphere during the Euros. He stated, “Violence, abuse, and disorder have no place in the game we love. The vast majority of fans are law-abiding, but we will have zero tolerance for those who disrupt this incredible event.”
The crackdown primarily targets individuals in England and Wales with football banning orders, amounting to 1,624 in total. Last season, courts issued 682 five-year bans, marking the highest number in 12 years. This increase can be attributed to the inclusion of possession of Class A drugs, such as cocaine, as a qualifying offense for a banning order.
To ensure compliance with these measures, the sanctioned hooligans will only be allowed to travel abroad with the permission of the Football Banning Orders Authority during the month-long Euros. Additionally, law enforcement will be granted new powers to intercept known troublemakers, further strengthening security measures.
This is not the first time that such bans have been implemented. During the 2022 Qatar World Cup, around 1,300 troublemakers were prevented from traveling under existing banning laws for international games. Now, these measures have been extended to cover the Euros.
While the majority of fans are expected to enjoy the tournament responsibly, it is important to be aware of potential risks. Pub-drinking England fans have been identified as particularly vulnerable to confrontations with martial arts trained football ultras. Authorities are urging fans to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
As the Euros draw near, it is clear that the UK government is taking the necessary steps to maintain order and prevent disturbances. By imposing travel bans on known hooligans and drug users, as well as granting law enforcement greater powers, the authorities aim to create a safe and enjoyable environment for football fans from all over the country. Let’s hope that these measures succeed in ensuring a peaceful and unforgettable tournament.
