Viktor Gyokeres is a testament to the fact that even players who struggle at Brighton have the potential to become Premier League stars. The Swedish forward has been in top form since joining Coventry in 2021, but his three-year stint on the south coast was less successful after he signed from IF Brommapojkarna in 2018.
Gyokeres will be the star attraction in the play-off final at Wembley, and while he will be focused on helping Coventry earn promotion against Luton, he is sure to attract plenty of Premier League interest. Brighton inserted a 10% sell-on clause in the deal taking him to the Ricoh Arena, meaning they could profit from any interest in the player.
According to Coventry City legend Steve Ogrizovic, Gyokeres has been the standout striker in the league, despite not scoring as many goals as Middlesbrough’s Chuba Akpom. Ogrizovic believes that Gyokeres, along with midfielder Gustavo Hamer, is bound for the Premier League, whether with Coventry or another club.
Although Gyokeres only made eight appearances for Brighton, scoring one goal, it was when he joined Coventry on loan that his career took off. He scored five goals in the second half of the 2020/21 campaign, which was enough to convince Coventry to sign him for less than £1million. He then scored 18 goals in his first full season with the club, an impressive tally for a side that finished 12th that season. Gyokeres continued his fine form this season, scoring 22 goals and providing 11 assists as Coventry finished fifth in the table.
