Conor Coady recalls ‘surreal’ conversation with Everton manager Frank Lampard and says he’ll know half of Goodison Park despite Liverpool love

Conor Coady has opened up on the ‘surreal’ conversation with Everton manager Frank Lampard before his loan move from Wolves.

The England defender, 29, surprised many by swapping Molineux for Goodison Park in a season-long deal on Monday.

Coady could make his Everton debut against Aston Villa on Saturday

Not only was Coady captain of Wolves and an integral player for seven years, he is also a boyhood Liverpool fan and spent nine years with the Reds as a youngster.

But joining talkSPORT on Wednesday morning, Coady suggests the decision was made easy after speaking to Toffees boss and Chelsea legend Lampard.

He said: “Getting the opportunity to speak to the manager was a bit surreal.

“I got goosebumps a little bit. I was just on the phone thinking, ‘I’m speaking to Frank Lampard here’.

“Listening to how he was speaking to me, one of the greatest English players of all time was on the phone to me saying what he wants to do with Everton. It was really surreal.”

Coady has made no secret of his love for the red half of Merseyside and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher jokingly called him a ‘turncoat’ as the Everton switch was confirmed.

But Coady, whose son already plays in the Toffees’ youth system, insists many of his family and friends are part of the Goodison Park faithful, making the move special.

He said: “A lot of my family are Blues. My uncle, who came to every Wolves game, is a massive Blue. So for him it’s a proud moment.

“When we play at Goodison, I think I’ll know half the crowd, because all my mates are blues and they’ve all got season tickets.

“It’s an incredible feeling for everybody. To come and play for a club in this city is incredible.”
