Concerns Rise Over USA’s Readiness to Host the 2026 World Cup Amid Political and Social Turmoil

Fifa’s Commitment to Inclusion Amid Growing Concerns

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has emphatically stated that the upcoming men’s World Cup in 2026 will be a celebration of global unity, asserting that “the world will be welcome” in the United States, with matches also held in Canada and Mexico. While Infantino’s optimism paints an inviting picture, the reality is more complex as the tournament approaches. Rising political tensions, increasing violence, and challenges related to ticket pricing and visa processing are casting shadows over this much-anticipated event.

Impact of Ticket Pricing on Accessibility

The ticketing process for the 2026 World Cup has sparked significant criticism, particularly following the launch of initial sales. Over 4.5 million fans entered a draw for the chance to purchase tickets, but many were dismayed by the steep prices. Although Fifa has not disclosed a comprehensive price list, initial reports reveal that general admission tickets for the opening match range from $560 to $2,235, a stark contrast to the previous World Cup in Qatar, where prices started at approximately $55.

The most affordable ticket for the final is set at $2,030, while hospitality packages are expected to be even pricier. Some tickets for less prominent matches are available for around $60, but these constitute a small fraction of the total seats. The introduction of a dynamic pricing model further complicates matters, with potential increases during later sales periods based on demand. Experts warn that this strategy may favor local fans while alienating international supporters.

Travis Murphy, a former State Department diplomat, highlighted the financial burden on fans, stating that attending the World Cup could become the most expensive experience yet, especially when factoring in travel and accommodation costs.

Visa Processing Challenges for International Fans

Visa requirements present another layer of complexity for World Cup attendees. While citizens from 42 territories can enter the US without a visa through the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation, many fans from Asia, Africa, and South America face significant hurdles. The US has not implemented fast-track visa processes like those seen in previous World Cups, leaving many applicants vulnerable to extensive delays.

Current wait times for visa interviews can exceed a year, which raises doubts about whether fans will receive timely approvals to attend the tournament. The Trump administration’s intensified scrutiny of visa applications, including monitoring social media activity, adds to the uncertainty. Experts emphasize the need for a more efficient system to ensure that international fans can participate in this global event.

Security Concerns Amid Rising Violence

The current political climate in the US has also raised alarms about safety during the World Cup. With a surge in political violence and mass shootings, the presence of National Guard troops in major cities has provoked widespread protests. The escalating tensions have led to fears regarding the overall security of the tournament, particularly in areas where games will be held.

Daniel Byman, director of the Warfare, Irregular Threats, and Terrorism Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, pointed out the considerable divisions within the US and the lack of a clear security protocol for large events under the current administration. The dismantling of critical government agencies has left a gap in institutional knowledge, raising concerns about the ability to handle security effectively.

A Call for Inclusivity and Safety

As the World Cup approaches, the juxtaposition of Infantino’s optimistic vision and the harsh realities facing potential attendees underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to ensure accessibility and safety. Addressing ticket pricing, streamlining visa processing, and implementing robust security measures will be crucial in fostering an environment that genuinely welcomes fans from around the world.

The 2026 World Cup represents an opportunity for the US to showcase its hospitality and commitment to inclusivity. However, the current trajectory suggests that significant challenges lie ahead. Stakeholders must collaborate to tackle these issues, ensuring that the event lives up to its promise of being a celebration for all.
