Wayne Rooney’s Insight: Comparing Man Utd Youngster to Bastian Schweinsteiger

Wayne Rooney, the United legend, has been left amazed by the talent and potential of Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo. In fact, Rooney has gone as far as comparing the 18-year-old midfielder to a young Bastian Schweinsteiger. Mainoo has already made 14 Premier League starts this season, despite a slow start due to injury. He has become an integral part of Erik ten Hag’s midfield, delivering impressive performances.

Despite not yet representing England at the Under-21 level, Mainoo is being considered for a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s senior squad for the upcoming international friendlies. There is even a possibility that he could make it to the Euros squad this summer. Rooney, who was present at Old Trafford to witness United’s clash with Everton, spoke highly of Mainoo’s maturity and drew parallels between him and Schweinsteiger.

Rooney described Mainoo’s performances as incredible, especially considering his young age. He noted that young players usually exhibit rawness and play off the cuff, but Mainoo stands out with his maturity and decision-making abilities. The former United captain sees similarities between Mainoo and Schweinsteiger in terms of their playing styles and their ability to entice opponents.

Rio Ferdinand, Rooney’s fellow pundit, also praised Mainoo’s displays this season. Ferdinand highlighted the young midfielder’s calmness on the pitch, a quality that is often lacking in young players. He emphasized that while many young players possess talent, it is their mentality and composure that set them apart. Mainoo, according to Ferdinand, possesses a calmness and assuredness beyond his years.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, a World Cup winner, had a brief spell with Manchester United, playing only 18 times in the Premier League. He was signed by his former Bayern Munich manager Louis van Gaal towards the end of his playing career in 2015. Despite his limited appearances, Schweinsteiger left a lasting impression on Rooney and is now being compared to Mainoo.

Rooney and Ferdinand’s praise for Mainoo’s performances this season highlights the potential and talent that the young midfielder possesses. He has shown maturity, decision-making skills, and composure on the pitch, qualities that are often lacking in players of his age. With comparisons to the likes of Schweinsteiger, Mainoo’s future at Manchester United looks bright.
