Cody Gakpo arrival could spell the end of Roberto Firmino at Liverpool, claims Tony Cascarino with PSV forward hailed a superb signing

Cody Gakpo has been hailed as a superb signing for Liverpool and a huge boost to Jurgen Klopp’s attacking line.

However, talkSPORT has been told it could signal the end of Roberto Firmino’s Anfield career.

PSV Eindhoven confirmed an agreement with Liverpool over a deal for Gakpo, with the Reds beating arch rivals Manchester United to the signing of the 23-year-old forward.

Holder of the captain’s armband for PSV, Gakpo is one of the most talented players in the Eredivisie, scoring 55 goals and recording 50 assists in 159 senior appearances for the club – including a superb tally of 13 goals and 17 assists in 24 games this season.

He’s also one of the best up-and-coming talents in the Dutch national team, weighing in with six goals in 14 caps for his country – including three strikes in his first World Cup in Qatar.

Beating United to his signature is a big coup for the Merseysiders, with Klopp adding yet another versatile forward to his attacking options.

But boyhood Liverpool fan and former Republic of Ireland striker Tony Cascarino admits it might spell the end of fan-favourite for Firmino.

“Wow, more goals,” Cascarino told the talkSPORT Breakfast.

“Just think, they’ve got Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez who you’d like to think will chip in with more goals, and now Gakpo, who is only 23 years old.

“The most surprising thing about Gakpo is that he’s 6ft 4in but he’s not your traditional centre-forward. He’s very athletic, he’s very quick.

“He’s so versatile that you can play him in any position in the forward line – and that’s typical of a Klopp signing, that he likes to use certain layers in different positions.

“But, I think there will be a sad exodus for some players who have been terrific for Liverpool but have their contracts running down.

“And I think that will be Firmino in the summer [after signing Gakpo].”

Firmino has become one of Liverpool’s most-loved players in the club’s history since his arrival from Hoffenheim in 2015. Universally adored by supporters, the Brazilian has collected every trophy up for grabs in a Reds shirt, has been key to one of the club’s most successful eras.

But it is likely the 31-year-old he could leave Anfield at the end of the season, with six months remaining on his current contract.

Former Man United assistant coach Rene Meulensteen also joined the talkSPORT Breakfast to react to the Gakpo deal, admitting Erik ten Hag will rue missing out on the Netherlands forward.

The Dutchman also gave Klopp on where best to play the Dutch ace in his Liverpool side, saying he’s been best utilised on the left-wing, although he has enjoyed some success as a central striker in the national team under Louis van Gaal.

“I do think his best position is on the left wing coming in – that’s where he plays for PSV,” Meulensteen added.

“He’s very good at taking the ball, taking players on, bringing it inside and then having a shot.

“Although at some point it might be a little too predictable if you keep doing that, especially in the Premier League you can’t get away with that at that level.

“But that’s why I think Van Gaal has put him in a different position in the Dutch national team and he scored three or four goals.”
