Lyon Leading the Race to Sign Christian Pulisic from Chelsea
Lyon is reportedly leading the race to sign Chelsea star Christian Pulisic this summer. The American star is said to be eager to find a new challenge away from Stamford Bridge, having struggled for minutes in recent seasons. With Chelsea set on trimming their bloated squad this summer, Pulisic is among the clutch of players tipped to move on. Lyon is making him a ‘priority signing’ and has approached the player about moving to France.
Lyon’s American owners have contacted Pulisic and believe they can secure his services for a bargain fee of €20million (£17.2m). Lyon’s controlling shareholder Eagle Football Holdings led by John Textor is leading those efforts with Pulisic open to the move. The USA international has attracted interest from clubs in Italy while it is thought he could seek to find another Premier League side. Eagle Football Holdings also have a controlling stake in Crystal Palace with a move to Selhurst Park another option being explored.
Pulisic’s representatives have also been offered the forward to both Manchester United and Newcastle United. Both sides, however, are thought to be prioritising other targets.
Pulisic’s Struggles at Chelsea
Pulisic joined Chelsea in a £58million move from Borussia Dortmund in 2019 but has struggled for game time in recent seasons. He scored 11 goals in his first season at Chelsea but his contributions have gradually fallen away since then, starting just eight league games last term. ‘It’s absolutely a time where I need to figure out what’s going to be best for my future and be somewhere where I can go and play and be trusted and feel good in what I’m doing,’ Pulisic told ESPN. ‘I want to find that joy at club level again, for sure.’
Chelsea’s Squad Trimming
Chelsea have been eager to trim their bloated squad this summer with Pulisic one of a number of high-profile departures. N’Golo Kante has left the club following the end of his contract to Saudi side Al Ittihad while the Blues have agreed a £30million deal with Manchester City for Mateo Kovacic to join the treble winners. Kai Havertz meanwhile is poised to join Arsenal in a £65m deal. Chelsea is also set to considerably fill their coffers with Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Kouliably and Hakim Ziyech close to joining Saudi Pro League clubs.
