Christian Eriksen made his long-awaited return to first-team training on Thursday and could be in the squad for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Everton.

The Dane joined United on a free transfer from Brentford in the summer transfer window and instantly became an integral part of Erik ten Hag’s plans at Old Trafford.

The midfielder has been out of action since January, suffering an ankle injury as a result of a nasty challenge from Andy Carroll in the FA Cup victory over Reading.

Initial assessments suggested Eriksen would be sidelined until the end of April or early May but the former Tottenham star was back on the training pitch with his teammates this week.

While Marcel Sabitzer was signed on loan from Bayern Munich in January, United have missed Eriksen’s craft in midfield.

United welcome Everton to Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon with Erik ten Hag hopeful he will be ready to make the matchday squad.

Asked by Viaplay in Denmark whether Eriksen is in line to make his comeback at the weekend, Erik the United boss said: ‘We will see. We see it from day to day.

‘He is progressing. He is now back only this week in team training tomorrow [Thursday] and the day after tomorrow [Friday].

‘We have two sessions. After that, we will decide if he is back in the squad again.’

Eriksen started all but one of United’s league games prior to his injury and his return will provide a huge boost for the season run-in with his side still challenging in the Europa League and FA Cup while fighting for a top four finish in the Premier League.

United have also been without Casemiro in recent weeks with the Brazil international serving a four-match ban as the result of a red card he was shown in the goalless draw with Southampton – his second sending off of the season.

The former Real Madrid star missed the FA Cup win against Fulham and league games against Newcastle United and Brentford.

He will sit out his final match against Sean Dyche’s side and will be available for the trip to Nottingham Forest on 16 April.
