Tammy Abraham is being touted as the solution to Chelsea’s goal-scoring problems, with the club urged to re-sign the striker for £68m this summer. The forward left Stamford Bridge in 2021 to join Roma, following the Blues’ club record £97.5m deal for Romelu Lukaku. Abraham has taken his game to new heights under Jose Mourinho in the Italian capital and he hit 27 goals in his debut campaign at the Stadio Olimpico.
However, Chelsea have struggled to find the back of the net this season, scoring just 29 goals in 27 matches. As a result, Graham Potter’s side are looking to sign a prolific forward this summer, with Napoli star Victor Osimhen among the names linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.
But former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton believes the club should trigger Abraham’s reported £68m release clause, which is said to become active in July, to bring him back to west London. “Tammy Abraham is an out and out No.9 and Chelsea decided to let him go,” Sutton told Betting Sites. “That was a bit of a strange one, but of course they expected Lukaku to come in and have a stormer which he didn’t do.”
Sutton added: “Buying Tammy back is one of those that I could see happening. I think he’s done pretty well at Roma. The criticism of Chelsea is that while they have lots of creative players, they don’t actually have somebody to stick the ball in the net. So I actually think £68m would be a smart piece of business to bring Tammy Abraham back to Chelsea.”
Abraham’s departure from Chelsea last summer was seen as a surprise by many, given his impressive performances for the club in previous seasons. However, the arrival of Lukaku meant that Abraham was surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge, and he was sold to Roma for a fee of around £34m.
Since joining Roma, Abraham has been a key player for the Italian side, scoring 27 goals in all competitions last season. His performances have reportedly attracted interest from a number of top clubs across Europe, including Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
However, Chelsea remain the favourites to re-sign the striker, with the club in need of a reliable goal scorer to complement their array of creative talents. Abraham’s physicality and aerial ability make him an ideal target man for Thomas Tuchel’s side, and his familiarity with the club and its playing style could make him an instant hit at Stamford Bridge.
Of course, there are risks involved in any big-money transfer, and Chelsea will need to weigh up whether Abraham is worth the reported £68m fee. The striker has had his fair share of injury problems in the past, and there are concerns over whether he can maintain his impressive form over a sustained period of time.
Nevertheless, Sutton believes that Abraham would be a smart signing for Chelsea, and that the club should do everything in their power to bring him back to west London. “I think it would be a good move for Chelsea,” he said. “Tammy Abraham knows the club, he knows the players, he knows the manager. He’s a proven goal scorer at this level, and I think he would be a great addition to the squad.”
