Smalling made a surprise switch from Manchester United to Roma on loan in 2019, before signing for the Italian side on a permanent deal the following year.

Since his move to the Stadio Olimpico, hr has made 116 appearances in all competitions, and was a crucial part of the squad that won the inaugural UEFA Conference League last season.

Despite him not being on the plane to Qatar, the defender’s wife took to social media to remind everyone of just how impressive he has been during the current campaign.

As per Opta’s Index scoring system, Smalling has been the highest performing English central defender so far this season, with the former United man earning a score of 76.3/100.

Sam was full of praise in her story on Instagram and showed her support for her husband when she said: “Couldn’t be more proud.”

They will then face the USA and Wales as they eye a spot in the round of 16.
