Mason Mount, the Chelsea star, was visibly emotional at the end of what could potentially be his final game for the club. The 24-year-old is expected to leave the Blues during the summer transfer window. Mount rose through the ranks of Chelsea’s successful Cobham academy and made his first-team debut in 2019. He played a crucial role in the club’s recent trophy triumphs, including an assist in their 2021 Champions League final victory. However, he has failed to agree on a new deal with Stamford Bridge, and his departure from the club seems imminent.
Chelsea’s last game of the season saw them host Newcastle, with Mount out of the squad due to his pelvic injury. After the 1-1 draw, the Blues players applauded their fans around the pitch at Stamford Bridge. In a video posted on Twitter, Mount appeared emotional while making his way back to the tunnel, with Ben Chilwell putting his arm around him in support. Another video from the Evening Standard’s Nizaar Kinsella showed him taking in Stamford Bridge for what could be the last time at the club.
Manchester United has reportedly joined Arsenal and Liverpool in the race to sign the England international. Chelsea’s incoming boss Mauricio Pochettino is keen for him to stay, but it may be too late. Mount ended the season with three goals and six assists, a far cry from his 29 goal contributions last season. His efforts reflect the Blues’ overall performance this season as they finished 12th in the Premier League. If he leaves, Mount would leave Chelsea with three major honours to his name. Pochettino undoubtedly has a talented squad at his disposal for the new campaign, but it looks set to be one without Mount ahead of what could be a busy transfer window in west London.
