Chelsea FC is once again on the search for a new manager after Mauricio Pochettino left the club by mutual consent following just one season at Stamford Bridge. Despite a challenging start to the season, Pochettino managed to lead Chelsea to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League. The team also finished as runners-up in the Carabao Cup and reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Now, the question is, who will be the next manager for Chelsea?
One early contender is Ruben Amorim, a Portuguese manager who recently guided Sporting to their first top-flight title in 19 years. Amorim is highly regarded by several European clubs and has piqued Chelsea’s interest. Another potential candidate is Hansi Flick, a German manager who previously had a successful stint at Bayern Munich, winning a treble of domestic league and cup titles, as well as the Champions League in the 2019-20 season. Flick’s availability and track record make him an attractive option for Chelsea.
Vincent Kompany, the former Manchester City captain, has also caught Chelsea’s attention. Despite Burnley’s recent relegation, Kompany’s reputation as a manager remains intact due to his impressive guidance in guiding the club to promotion a few seasons ago. Kieran McKenna, the 38-year-old coach who led Ipswich to Premier League promotion this season, is also among the favorites. His ability to produce free-flowing football with Ipswich has caught Chelsea’s eye.
Jose Mourinho, who previously managed Chelsea and won three Premier League titles and an FA Cup with the club, has been linked with a potential third spell as manager. However, it seems unlikely given his recent dismissal from Roma. Julian Nagelsmann, the former Bayern Munich boss, is another name that has been circulating. Although he recently took over as Germany manager, his contract only runs until July 2024, making him available for Chelsea after this summer’s European Championships.
Michel Sanchez, the Girona boss, may be a left-field choice but has impressed this season by guiding his side to Champions League qualification. The 48-year-old has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Xavi at Barcelona. Thomas Tuchel, who led Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021, is also looking for a new challenge after leaving Bayern Munich. While it’s unlikely that he will return to Stamford Bridge, nothing can be ruled out.
Roberto de Zerbi, the former Brighton boss, is another potential candidate. Despite his recent resignation from Brighton, De Zerbi’s previous success with the club, including a sixth-place finish and European qualification, has put him on the radar of top clubs. However, he has stated that he currently has no role lined up.
As Chelsea embarks on their search for a new manager, the decision will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the future of the club. With several highly-rated candidates in the running, it remains to be seen who will take the helm and lead Chelsea back to success.
