Chelsea’s Inquiry for Liverpool Forward Last Summer
Last year, Chelsea made an inquiry for Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, but the Reds rejected the offer. Liverpool managed to secure Nunez from Benfica in a record-breaking £85 million deal in 2022 after facing tough competition. Nunez caught Liverpool’s eye with his impressive performance in the Primeira Liga, scoring 26 goals in 28 games. He made a strong start at Anfield by scoring on his debut in the Community Shield victory against Manchester City.
Despite his initial success, Nunez has faced criticism for his inconsistent performances in England. In his first 18 months, he only managed to score nine league goals. However, this season, he has already equaled his previous top-flight tally and received praise from Jurgen Klopp. Despite rumors of Liverpool considering cutting their losses, the club made it clear that they were not open to offers for Nunez.
Chelsea’s co-sporting director, Paul Winstanley, has been a long-time admirer of Nunez. Winstanley had shown interest in Nunez during his time at Brighton when the striker was still playing for Benfica. Chelsea signed Nicolas Jackson for £32 million, but the 22-year-old has struggled to find the back of the net in the Premier League.
Chelsea’s search for a striker led them to sign 18-year-old forward Dujuan Richards in the January transfer window. However, the club is prioritizing signing an elite striker at the end of the season. Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Brentford’s Ivan Toney are reportedly at the top of Chelsea’s wishlist for the summer transfer window. While there have been rumors linking Chelsea with Kylian Mbappe, it has been widely reported that the French star has signed a pre-contract agreement with Real Madrid.
As Chelsea looks to strengthen their squad, they will need to offload players to comply with Premier League profit and sustainability rules. With Todd Boehly’s significant investment in the club, Chelsea is determined to secure top talent to compete on all fronts.
