Chelsea keeping tabs on Aaron Ramsdale’s situation at Arsenal
Arsenal surprisingly signed David Raya on loan from Brentford in the summer transfer window and have the option to make the deal permanent for £27 million next year. This has put Aaron Ramsdale’s place at Arsenal under threat, and according to reports, Chelsea are now ‘closely monitoring’ the situation.
Ramsdale kept his place for Arsenal’s first four Premier League games, but Mikel Arteta opted to drop the England international and start Raya for the 1-0 win over Everton on Sunday. The report claims that Chelsea ‘remain open’ to signing another goalkeeper despite bringing in Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic during the summer transfer window.
Bayern Munich are also said to be interested in Ramsdale as they are in the market for Manuel Neuer’s long-term successor. When asked about his decision to axe Ramsdale, Arteta said: “I think I mentioned it that we wanted to build a squad with two quality players in each position, with different characteristics, and we have got that now. And to maximise that they have to play games, and we have a lot of things coming up now.”
It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will make a move for Ramsdale in the January transfer window, but it is clear that his place at Arsenal is under threat. With Raya now seemingly Arteta’s first choice goalkeeper, it could be time for Ramsdale to move on in order to get regular game time.
Chelsea have been linked with a number of goalkeepers this summer, including Dean Henderson and Andre Onana, but they have yet to make a move for any of them. It remains to be seen if they will make a move for Ramsdale, or if they will wait until the summer transfer window.
For now, Ramsdale will have to wait and see what happens with his future at Arsenal. He will be hoping that he can regain his place in the starting lineup and prove himself to Arteta, but with Raya now seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order, his future at the club looks uncertain.
